Due to the arrest of one of our students a few years ago, our eyes have been opened to the Prison conditions in Haiti. Since then we have learned that Haiti’s legal system is in disarray.
There are no public defenders, so those who are arrested for petty crimes or even due to a misunderstanding, waste away in pre-trial holdings, with no chance of having their cases heard before a judge.
Only those who can afford a lawyer ever have a chance of knowing the length of their sentence, and when they would be released.
May 2014 we toured some of the prisons in Haiti, gathering information for the purpose of planning and implementing a legal aid clinic in Petit-Goave.
November 2014 a proposal was submitted to the board of directors of Haiti Arise Ministries. Approval was given in March 2015 and we are happy to announce that the legal aid clinic has been open and running since February 15, 2016! Please contact us for more info.
